Choosing the Best Binoculars For Your Needs

The binocular is one of the most used types of optical glasses in the world. They are used by the military and by civilians for a number of activities and therefore they come in a variety of different models and styles. While this means that consumers have a wide variety of glasses to choose from, it can also mean that it can be difficult for the average person to figure out the one that perfectly suits their needs. Fortunately, choosing the right pair doesn’t have to be difficult, as long as a few things are kept in mind. Below are some of the things to look for when you’re searching for the best pair for your outdoor activities.

Choose the Correct Magnification

One of the first things to check out on any prospective pair of field glasses is their magnification. While it’s easy to say that you should get the highest magnification possible, not everyone needs that power. For enjoying outdoor sports or for general use for hiking, then a 7x or 8x pair would probably be sufficient. That range would probably be suitable for most bird watchers as well. 7x to 10x are probably suitable for hunting, although if your hunting long range, then you’ll probably want to get a pair of glasses with 12x magnification or even higher. It all really depends on personal preference, however, so if a person wants a higher magnification they shouldn’t feel limited. They should choose the magnification they want.

Checking Objective Lens Size

The size of the objective lens is another thing to consider. Although figuring out the exact specifications you need for a particular activity can be difficult to determine, a general analysis can be obtained by looking at the three most common sizes of field glasses—full size, mid-size and compact size.

Full-size models typically come in the 8×42 or 10×50 range and are appropriate for bird watching, or for marine use. They tend to capture a lot more light than other types and can perform well even in low light conditions. However, they also tend to be bigger and heavier than other types of field glasses and may not be appropriate for camping or backpacking.

Mid-size models are great for viewing sporting events and commonly come in the 7×35 or 10×32 range. Light transmission is pretty good through these models, but they can also be a bit heavy for taking out on the trail.

Compact models come in the 8×25 or 10×25 range and are lightweight enough for most people but don’t offer the amount of light transmission other models do.  They are good for people who don’t need performance, only the ability to see far away.

Eye Relief Specifications

Eye relief specs are another thing that should be closely looked at, particularly if you wear glasses. This spec tells you how far the field glasses can be held away from your face while viewing. If you wear eye glasses, then you should get a pair of field glasses with an eye relief of 11mm or higher.

The Type of Field Glass Prism

These devices are manufactured using a number of different prisms but the most commonly used ones are Porro prisms and roof prisms. Porro prisms are less expensive than roof prisms but they are also bulkier and heavier. Roof prisms are better quality and are lightweight but generally cost more than Porro prisms.

Water-Resistant & Waterproof Models

There’s a difference between water-resistant and waterproof models. Water-resistant models are designed to be protected against short-term light rain but not for being fully submerged in water. Waterproof models, on the other hand, are designed with o-rings that keep water out, even if they are accidentally dropped in water. However, that doesn’t mean they should remain in water for a long period of time because that can damage even the best waterproof models.

Fog Proof Models

These type of glasses are either Nitrogen or Argon purged and then sealed. This prevents moisture from getting in behind the lends and fogging it up. It’s a useful feature to have in humid or moist environments.

Price

Price, of course, is another factor that must be decided before purchasing a pair of field glasses. If a person needs a pair for only occasional use, then they are probably better off looking for the cheapest model available that has the features they want. However, for bird watchers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts who rely on their field glasses, then it’s important that they buy the best model in their budget possible. After all, for certain professions and activities, buying a pair of these glasses is an investment and not choosing the best one possible, regardless of the cost is a mistake.
