Choosing the Best Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board
When it comes to the inflatable stand-up boards currently available on the market today, there are only a few key factors that you need to worry about but they are very important nonetheless. Before purchasing one of these boards you should take size, hull shape and types of inflatable boards. Let’s examine each of these individually so that when it’s time to buy a board of your dreams you’ll have all of the information to make an informed decision.
When it comes to paddle boards, generally wider is better. That’s because a wider board is more stable and has less of a chance of flipping over. Wide boards (31-inches or wider) are good for beginners because of their stability. However, what you gain in stability you will lose in speed because wider boards are also a lot slower.
Longer boards are generally faster than shorter boards but they are also harder to turn, so choose a board that’s the appropriate length for what you are planning to do with the board. If you plan on stand-up paddle boarding, then you’ll probably want to get an 8-foot to an 11-foot board. If you plan on racing, then you’ll probably want to get a board that’s 12+-feet in length. Most beginners should get a board that’s in the 10-foot to 11-foot range.
The thicker the board, the firmer it feels when you’re standing on it. Generally speaking, you’ll usually want to get a board that’s around 6-inches thick.
Hull shape isn’t too important unless you are racing. Most inflatable boards have a flat hull that makes them appropriate for stand-up riders. Race boards, on the other hand, have displacement hulls that allows them to effectively cut through the water.
Types of Boards
Another thing that needs to be considered are the type of inflatable boards that you need. While most inflatable ones are of the same general type, some manufacturers are beginning to adopt the styles of other types of boards. Here are the 3 main types of boards:
Flat Water Racing Board-With a width of less than 28-inches and a length of about 12-feet to 14-feet, these boards are designed to cut through the water. While they are faster than other boards, they are also not very stable and aren’t recommended for beginners. Another disadvantage they have is that they can often be pricey (over $1,200 dollars).
Surfing Paddle Board-These boards are wide and thicker than traditional boards. They aren’t designed for stand up riding but are instead designed for sitting or laying on and paddling. Prices are generally between $900 to $1500.
Flat Water Touring Board-These boards are fairly stable and are around 10-feet to 12-feet long with a nice wide deck. They aren’t fast but they do provide more speed than some other board types. They usually cost upwards of $1500.
Is an Inflatable SUP (Stand-Up Paddle Board) Right For Me?
Another thing that really needs to be considered before purchasing one of these boards is whether they are really right for you. After all, you don’t want to go through the trouble and the cost of purchasing a board only to find out that it doesn’t fit your needs, so here are the pros and cons of these boards:
- Easy to Store & Transport-One of the main advantages of these type of inflatable boards are that they are easy to store and transport. All you have to do is take them with you and inflate at your destination and then store them in a closet or a chest when you’re finished with it. They are certainly easier to transport than fiberglass models.
- Have a softer surface-Taking a fall on a fiberglass board can be very hard on your head. However, taking a fall on an inflatable can be a lot easier to take. While a lot of the inflatables out there are rather firm, they are a lot softer than fiberglass boards.
- Durability-You may think that inflatable boards are less durable than fiberglass ones but actually, that isn’t the case. Inflatable ones often do a better job at resisting dings from rocks. Rock hits that might ding a fiberglass board usually just results in the board bouncing off.
- Stability-What most people don’t realize is that inflatable boards are generally more stable than fiberglass ones. This makes them a good choice for children learning how to paddle board or for beginners. However, that doesn’t mean that these boards aren’t good for advanced users. In fact, I know quite a few advanced riders who prefer these types of boards over just about any other.
- Speed & Maneuverability-Not matter what type of board you buy, you just aren’t going to get the speed and maneuverability out of an inflatable board that you would out of a fiberglass board. Which is probably why just about all paddle-board racers choose fiberglass models over inflatable ones.
