A Guide To Buying Men’s Socks

Although we could spend all of our time listing some of the best men’s socks around, that’s almost not worth doing. That’s because each man has his own style and there are thousands of different socks out there. Better use of our time, at least in our opinion, is to give all of our readers the information that they need so that they can make their own informed buying decision. And that’s precisely why we’ve decided to write this guide. It’s a guide designed to help every man buy the perfect pair of socks for their needs.

Choose A Material

For most guides on buying men’s socks, the material the socks are made from are second to the sock’s style. However, that’s not true in our guide. That’s because we feel that the material from which the socks are made is one of the most important things for a person to consider when they’re buying men’s socks. Most of the socks manufactured today are made from one of the following materials: cotton, wool, cashmere, silk or synthetics. We’re going to briefly touch on each of these materials below, so all of our readers can learn the benefit of one type of material over another.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the more popular materials used to make men’s socks and there’s a good reason for that fact. Cotton is a lightweight material that’s soft and allows air to circulate around the foot. That makes this material cooler than other fabrics, which is why it’s often used for both athletic socks and formal socks. If there’s one drawback to cotton, however, it’s the fact that it absorbs and holds onto moisture—and it’s this property that can make the wearer feel like they have soggy feet.

Wool

Wool is another material that’s popular for men’s socks. One of the main reasons why it’s so popular is that it does an amazing job of keeping the wearer’s feet comfortable. In cold weather, wool tends to hold onto body heat and in warm weather, it tends to be cool to the skin. And because it doesn’t hold onto moisture the way that cotton does, it doesn’t end up getting soggy.

As great as this material is, however, it’s not without its drawbacks. One of the main drawbacks is that unless the wool is blended with other materials, it tends to be thick and scratchy. That’s why many sock manufacturers blend it with synthetic fabrics such as rayon. The main drawback of the use of this material for socks is that it costs more than cotton socks do.

Cashmere

Many people place cashmere in the same category as wool and that’s understandable considering the two materials are very similar. Like wool, cashmere will keep the wearer’s feet warm during the winter and cool during the summer, and it also doesn’t absorb moisture as cotton does. Unfortunately, this material is more expensive than not only cotton but also wool. It is also a material that requires the consumer to take special care of it. It’s not a material that can be tossed in the washer or dried in the dryer. No, it’s a material that has to be hand-washed to prevent it from losing its shape.

Silk

Silk is another material that’s quite expensive and requires special handling. And not only are they more expensive and harder to take care of than either cotton, wool or cashmere, they’re also less likely to last very long. That’s why we don’t recommend wearing these socks for anything more than the occasional formal event.

Synthetics

Synthetic materials include rayon, acrylic, spandex, olefin, and polyester. While these materials work well when combined with other materials to impart durability to the socks, no one should purchase socks that are manufactured using 100% synthetics. Those socks would be inferior to the ones that are blended with primary materials, regardless of whether that material was cotton, wool, or cashmere.

Now Let’s Talk About Style

Since we’ve consumed over half of this guide with a discussion on the materials used to make men’s socks, it’s time to quickly turn our attention to the styles of men’s socks. And since we think that most men are going to know whether they need to buy athletic, work, or formal socks, we’ve decided to spend this section of the guide talking about texture, ribbing, and of course, style.

Texture & Ribbing

Men should absolutely think about whether they want socks that are smooth or ones that have some form of texture or ribbing. Although in most instances, smooth socks are more comfortable to wear for long periods, textured or ribbed socks can be quite an interesting focal point and add some visual interest to the socks.

Bold Colors And Or Patterns

The last thing that men are going to want to think about is whether they want to go with dark colors, bold solid colors, of if they want to pursue some type of patterns such as stripes or dots. It’s up to the wearer, of course, so men should take the time to choose the ones that fit their style the best.
