Top 10 Best Wool Socks of 2018 – Reviews

Most people don’t give much thought to what they wear on their feet. They simply select a pair of socks that they think will be comfortable and leave it at that. And most of the time the socks that are chosen are cotton ones which might be good for some circumstances but isn’t right for winter wear or for the great outdoors.

What’s wrong with socks made out of cotton? Most of the time, nothing is wrong with them but put them in conditions that are wet and cold and they quickly lose their ability to insulate your feet. That’s because cotton loses all of its insulating properties when it gets wet. Even if you put on great winter boots on top of them, your feet will eventually sweat and these socks will become worthless for keeping your feet warm.

For outdoor conditions – especially in winter weather – wool socks are better. Wool is an incredible insulator that will keep your feet warm, even when the socks themselves are wet. They can also absorb a whole lot of moisture and when you do need to dry them, they dry really quickly. However, that isn’t the only great thing about wearing socks which are made from wool. Socks made from this material also have antibacterial properties. Which means that you can wear them several different times before they need to be thrown in the washer.

Not all socks made from this material are high-quality though. Just because they’re made from wool doesn’t mean they are the best ones available. When it comes to this particular type of apparel, quality does matter, so it’s important to choose the best wool socks available. And that’s why I’ve decided to select the best ones available below and then give you some tips on buying these types of socks.

How To Choose Socks That Suit Your Feet

As you can probably see from some of the more popular socks on the market today, there are a variety of different options when it comes to purchasing socks that are made out of wool. There are socks that are made almost completely of wool and some others that are made from wool blends. And that’s not even mentioning the other features to think about including sock height, sock weight and thickness and sock construction. With that in mind, here are some of the things you need to consider before purchasing your next pair of socks – wool or otherwise.

Wool Vs. Wool Blends

Merino wool is a type of wool that’s breathable and is very warm. It’s made from a particular type of sheep from New Zealand and is soft, itch-free and resists odors. Which is probably why it’s the preferred material for hikers and other performance athletes. The only real downside of this material is that it is more expensive than other materials such as cotton and nylon.

Wool can be blended with a number of other materials which make the fabrics cheaper than pure Merino wool but also offer a number of advantages. For instance, acrylic is often added to socks to provide cushioning and nylon is added for durability. Polyester is another material that’s often added to wool to add strength. Polyester can also be fairly warm, although it’s not as warm as wool. To add elasticity to the fabric, some manufacturers will also add either Lycra, Elastane or Spandex to the wool.

Sock Weight & Thickness

Another thing to consider is how thick you want the socks to be. As a rule, thicker socks are generally warmer but they can also be quite bulky. This is especially true of socks made out of wool. If you need socks for winter use, then you’ll probably want to go with a medium weight or heavyweight sock. However, if you’re are doing a sport such as running or are hiking during the summer months, then you are probably going to want to go with a sock that’s lightweight to medium weight.

Sock Height

Sock height has been pondered since the conception of the sock. For activities such as biking or running, ankle or quarter-size socks are usually worn. For activities such as backpacking, camping, and hiking, then crew socks are usually worn. For activities such as snowboarding or skiing, calf socks are usually the preferred socks. Of course, it really all depends on personal preference and what is more comfortable to the wearer.

Seam & Interior Sock Construction

The last thing that needs to be considered before purchasing a pair of socks is how the seams are constructed. You want toe seams that are flat, so they don’t rub against your toes and cause irritation or blisters. You’ll also want to make sure that the inside of your socks has cushioning. If they don’t, then rigid hiking boots can be really hard on your feet. Of course, if you’re not planning on doing a whole lot of physical activity, then these two areas of the sock aren’t as important.
